Causes for Momentary
Interruptions
Momentary interruptions are
caused from temporary faults on utility power lines. Temporary
faults can occur from any object in contact with a power line for a
temporary length of time.
Objects which can cause temporary
contacts are trees, lightning, animals, vehicles, cranes, etc.
The utility line does not experience
any permanent damage because of the utility overcurrent protective circuit
breakers which automatically open and close under a temporary electrical
fault.
Causes for Power Outages
Outages also result from objects
in contact with the power line which result in permanent damage to the
line. The length of restoration for power to come back up depends
on the extent of damage.
Internal Building Outages can
also result from a short circuit on an electrical load causing a breaker
to trip or fuse to blow or from a harmonic resonance condition which
results in an overcurrent on an electrical circuit.
